In collaboration with the Karachi School of Business and Leadership (KSBL), Engro Foundation established the Circular Plastics Institute (CPI) to address the knowledge gap in waste management and recycling while promoting circularity.
Since its inception, CPI has made remarkable strides, conducting pioneering research and securing USD 85,000 in international funding.
Key Research and Initiatives:
- Plastic Waste Imports: Mapping Pakistan’s PVC supply chain and assessing factors impacting the Basel Convention implementation.
- Mapping Open Burning: Identifying plastic burning sites and their pollution impact in Karachi and Lahore.
- Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): Analyzing the environmental performance of four major PVC products.
- Waste Picker Mapping: Studying waste pickers in three cities to understand their challenges and contributions to circularity.
- Marine Pollution Study: Investigating waste sources and types along Karachi’s coastal sites.
- Circular Economy Potential: Advising the Board of Investment on opportunities for circular economy development.
CPI is committed to advancing innovative solutions and driving impactful research to support sustainable waste management and a circular economy in Pakistan.
