Engro Foundation, in collaboration with WWF-Pakistan, has launched a transformative initiative to plant and conserve forests across over 650 hectares (1,612 acres) in Pakistan. This project is not only focused on ecosystem and biodiversity conservation but also on actively involving local communities in the restoration process.
The initiative empowers local farmers by partnering with 84 individuals who play a crucial role in the plantation activities. In addition, farmers are supported with solar water pumps and fodder seeds to enhance their agricultural and livestock needs, creating a sustainable livelihood alongside environmental restoration.
The project is located in the Jhelum district, part of the Potohar Region, which is a critical habitat for the vulnerable Punjab Urial and migratory waterfowl near the Jhelum River and seasonal streams. By restoring vegetation, the project enhances these habitats, contributing to the conservation of these wildlife species.
Through community engagement, the project raises awareness and mobilizes local populations to adopt sustainable environmental practices. The Afforestation & Ecosystem Restoration Project is a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable future for Pakistan, fostering biodiversity while supporting the well-being of local communities.
